Orange baby
The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) Zoo welcomed a baby Francois' langur monkey into the world on September 1, 2011. The proud parents were Lu Lu and Neo and the baby was nicknamed 'Tango' by zoo workers. The red hair on Tango is natural and provides a way for Francois' langur monkeys to identify their offspring quickly in the wild. After 6 months as the baby monkeys become more independent, the crimson tresses fade and is replaced by solid black hair like his parents.
Francois' langur monkeys are some of the rarest monkeys in the world with only 1,600 remaining in the wilds of their native southwest China and 500 remaining in north Vietnam. Conservation efforts in China to stem the decline of the monkeys have been minimal in the past few decades but with the population dropping to precipitous levels, protective measures have stepped up in recent years.
