Aloka, an Indian stray dog, has become a symbol of peace as he walks along side Buddhist monks in the "Walk for Peace," a journey spanning over 2,300 miles 

across the United States.

Background of Aloka

Aloka is believed to be an Indian Pariah dog who began his journey as a stray in

India. He gained fame for his unwavering loyalty to a group of Buddhist monks during their peace pilgrimage. Initially, he joined the monks during their walk across India, where he traveled over 3,000 kilometers for more than 100 days. His name, Aloka, translates to "light" or "inner clarity" in Sanskrit, reflecting his calm and peaceful demeanor.

The Walk for Peace

The "Walk for Peace" began on October 26, 2025, when a group of 

approximately 19 Buddhist monks from the Huong Dao Vipassana Bhavana Center in Fort Worth, Texas, set out on a journey to promote peace and compassion. The walk is expected to cover around 3,700 kilometers, concluding in Washington, D.C., in February 2026. Aloka has been a constant companion to the monks, embodying the message of peace throughout the journey.

Recent Updates

In early January 2026, Aloka was diagnosed with a leg injury while 

accompanying the monks. He underwent surgery to address a tear in his cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) and is currently in recovery. His care plan allows him to gradually rejoin the monks on their walk, emphasizing the importance of his 

health and well-being.

Aloka (dog) - Wikipedia

 Inspired by the teachings of Gautama Buddha, the Walk for Peace aims to raise "awareness of peace, loving kindness, and compassion across America and the world." 

The group is led by Bhikkhu Pannakara, a former Motorola engineer and University of Texas at Arlington graduate who traded his corporate career for the monkhood. (The term bikkhu refers to an ordained monk in the Buddhist lineage.)
