In England, artist Francis Barraud (1856-1924) painted his brother's dog Nipper listening to the horn of an early phonograph during the winter of 1898. Victor Talking Machine Company began using the symbol in 1900, and Nipper joined the RCA family in 1929.

Nipper (1884–1895) was a dog who served as the model for a painting titled His Master's Voice. This image was the basis for the dog and gramophone logo used by several audio recording and associated brands: His Master's Voice, HMV, EMI, RCA, Victor Talking Machine Company, RCA Victor, JVC and Deutsche Grammophon.
Nipper was born in 1884 in Bristol, England, and died in September 1895. It has been claimed in various sources that he was a Jack Russell Terrier, a Fox Terrier, or "part Stafford-shire Bull Terrier". He was named Nipper because he would bite the backs of visitors' legs.

RCA Victor’s Nipper is often called the best known dog in the world. But like many Americans, he is an immigrant; the original Nipper was a Brit. And like many creative works destined to become classics, the iconic image of a white mutt cocking his ear to his master’s recorded voice suffered rejection before achieving fame.
Possible breed type of Nipper:

Staffordshire Bull Terrier
